I got really into the history of the Silk Road, the Mongol Empire and it's
culture and arts for a time, and did this triptych project.
I wanted to show both the nomad lifestyle,the scale and immensity of the landscape, but also what I found too often ignored, the cities and settlements that punctuated the Silk Road.
I tried to convey the sense of journey with the movement of the compositions and the evolution of the light throughout the three pictures, and I've woven patterns inspired by Mongolian rugs in their textures.
I made a series of sketches and paintings beforehand to get into the mood of the project, and try to
find ways to stylize and find interesting shapes for horses, having never drawn one before.
